Great questions. If a burger flipper plans to work as a burger flipper for most of his career, then he needs to save just about every penny. Most people don't know how much they need in order to retire. That problem is not unique to minimum wage earners. And that number may actually be realistic depending on how far away retirement is and if he can earn some extra. Admittedly, I'm assuming that a minimum wage earner does not have many expenses and is accustomed to a minimalistic lifestyle. Therefore, he does not need as much as a doctor will need since retirement will simply be an extension of that minimalistic lifestyle.

For an in-depth estimate of how much one will need, use: http://www3.troweprice.com/ric/ric/public/ric.do

For a simple estimate, use: http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/retirementneed/retirementneed_plain.html

How much should a minimum wage burger flipper be saving for retirement? It it realistic that a burger flipper would even know this number? Is saving this amount realistic?

I agree that she aptly describes the current situation in America and the frustration we all feel. My concern is that her approach to solving the problems are not the right approaches as they aren't thoroughly vetted.

Jane White knows why American families feel as if they are on a treadmill running out of control, and she explains the reasons with clarity, insight, and rare honesty.
